In a Blink of An Eye

May 5, 2007

It only takes that long to screw up your life. a blink.
It was a normal Thursday afternoon. I woke up, fed the kids breakfast, got everyone ready and then went to drop NK at work. Stopped at Micheals and Joanns.
Went to the gym, did my workout.
Picked up the kids from the daycare, loaded them in and started the drive home. Just.Like.Any.Other.Thursday
Took my normal route home.
I was thinking, what to cook for dinner, and hoping that my kids will go to bed early so that I can watch Grey’s in peace.
I was driving and so the light change to yellow. I never jump yellow unless absolutely necessary. So I hit my brakes. I hear a big ship like horn, look at my rear view mirror and saw a truck like this coming straight towards my van. My feet was still on the brake. It was a one-lane road, the light had already turned red…I couldn’t do anything but watch it hit me…
BANG..and it throws the van forward another 1/4 mile. I screamed. I stopped the van, and Neil was screaming..I remember unbuckling him, I remember getting squeezing through the small space under Samar’s car seat to unbuckle Neil, Avasha had already unbuckled herself.
A kind lady stopped her car, took the baby from me and put all the kids in her car and switched a DVD. I just remember standing there, not knowing what to do..The truck driver comes out and asks me “Am I okay, is anyone injured” We had stopped outside a farm and the guys in the house came out..they asked the same thing. The kind lady hugged me, I found my cell and dialed NK’s no. He knew right away something was wrong..shouted the directions at him and then cried some more.

The police came, and did their things. We drove the van home because it was 1/2 mile away..I couldn’t stop crying.
We went to the ER later in the evening.

I have horrible horrible back pain. My stomach feels like I did 10000 sit ups.
But I am lucky, the kids and I walked away from this without a scratch. The rear windshield is completely shattered and all the pieces flew in. Avasha was in the back row, Samar is a rear facing infant seat. The glass could have hit him..It could have much much worse.
The impact of a fully loaded dump truck hitting us was so severe, that my driver’s seat broke.

Shoot! I am so glad you and the children are safe. Be sure to go to the chiropractor and get some Xrays of your back, you may be misaligned and it will hurt you a lot more down the road.

Very glad you are safe and the children too. Huggs to all of you.

Oh, Sunita, I’m catching up on blogs and just reading this. I’m so sorry. I hope you and the kids didn’t have any lingering side-effects or injuries from this. How scary! But it sounds like there were some Good Samaritans to help you and that makes me happy for you!

    Happy Mother’s Day, Sunita!

    Hi Sunita,

This is Jyotsna. I haven’t read your blog in a while, and then saw this. It is so amazing how things happen in the blink of an eye, and you and the kids are so, so lucky that it wasn’t worse. I hope you all feel better soon. Sending hugs!
